New Zealand is the youngest country on earth - the last major landmass
to be discovered. It has a rich and fascinating history, reflecting both
our Maori and European heritage. Amazing Maori historic sites and taonga
(treasures), some dating back almost a thousand years, are a contrast
to many beautiful colonial buildings. A walk around any New Zealand city
today shows what a culturally diverse and fascinating country we have
become.
New Zealand's awesome landscapes, lush forests, amazing wildlife and pleasant
climate make it a haven for many outdoor activities, and a great place
to unwind. New Zealand society is diverse, sophisticated, and multicultural,
and the honesty, friendliness, and openness of Kiwis will impress you.
And the great advantage of New Zealand is that all of its diverse physical,
cultural, and artistic landscapes are so close to each other!

Pay rates for health professionals working in New Zealand are generally
governed by statutory Awards and can vary from City to City. Most professionals
are paid according to a collective agreement but individual agreements
are also provided. Earnings depend on factors such as your length of experience,
whether you work in public or private sector. In most circumstances, you
may be entitled to allowances. Please refer to the governing registration
body for more information on pay rates.
We recommend to all visitors, that you ensure your travel insurance covers
you up until you have arrived in New Zealand and registered and paid for
private medical insurance. Citizens from the United Kingdom and Australia
have access to public health care through reciprocal agreements but this
is for urgent and necessary treatment only.
Please note: HSS accepts no responsibility for an individual's failure
to arrange appropriate cover for travel and medical insurance.
There is a wide variety of accommodation available in New Zealand. The
types of accommodation and costs vary. There are numerous, good quality,
clean and reasonably priced hostels and hotels in all cities which we
can assist you with. For families, it is advisable to have a substantial
amount saved to cover hotel accommodation and later rent, bond and furnishing
expenses when you find somewhere suitable. HSS can assist with booking
accommodation.
You will be required to arrange and pay for your flights. In some instances
you could be reimbursed by your new employer. HSS do offer an airport
collection service to take you to your accommodation on arrival. Please
advise HSS if you would like this.
Your consultant will be available, after you arrive and start work, to
offer any assistance you may require to help make the transition to New
Zealand. We also have regular candidate events where you will have the
opportunity to meet others.
- Records of years of service to ensure that you can be paid at the
rate relevant to your experience, you should bring letters from your
previous employers, stating the period of your employment, and total
number of hours worked. These can usually be obtained from the human
resources department.
- References: If not already supplied, bring details of 2 referees
- Appropriate Nursing Registration for New Zealand
- You should bring proof of your Hep B status and record of immunisation
- A copy of your police check as we also need this before you can start
work
- Although you are travelling, you are required to look professional
while you are at work. All hospitals place a great deal of importance
on appearance and will not allow you to work if you are not dressed
appropriately. All staff in hospitals within New Zealand are required
to wear smart, corporate looking uniform. Please bring with you a navy
skirt / tailored trousers, and a white collared blouse, or be prepared
to purchase the above when you arrive. Shoes should be a closed toe
leather / leather look in black or navy. Hair must be tied back and
jewellery kept to a minimum.
- Obtain an IRD Number. This is required for taxation purposes. As you
are unable to work until you have applied for your IRD number, you should
arrange this as soon as you arrive. Your HSS Consultant will assist
with your application.
- Obtain MRSA clearance / Mantoux test. In New Zealand all hospitals
require MRSA clearance and a Mantoux test. This can be performed in
New Zealand and this takes approximately 48 hours. Your HSS Consultant
